EMBASSY
An embassy is a unique patch of sovereign territory allocated to a foreign country, and has traditionally been a site for diplomacy; a doorway to a foreign state. More than a diplomatic outpost, the new Estonian embassy is a cultural symbol of a people and their lifestyle. It leverages the power of architecture to convey a message in a way that spoken and written words can't.
The transparency of the architecture allows a symbolic and literal view into the building, while the solid base and west facade harmonize with the historic character of the area, and present a formal face to the host nation. The diverse functions are harmonized into a strong, singular building image that reads as a "city skyline in miniature" - a piece of Estonia transplanted into a foreign country. Inside this "singular building", an architectural promenade of varying spatial experiences, thresholds, and views unfolds as one moves between the entrance lobby and the different functional areas.
The project was completed in collaboration with BBL Architekten.
